Appearing in red ink on all of the artist’s work is her traditional form of signature—her Chinese name, a phonetic transliteration of “Charlene” written in the Chinese language.

Charlene Fuhrman-Schulz is a full-time artist who has studied Chinese brush painting with several teachers since 1989.

She currently continues her studies with Painting Master, I-Hsiung Ju who resides in Princeton, New Jersey.

Since meeting him in 1990, he has sponsored three trips to China in which she participated in workshops and exhibitions. The trips in 1993, 2001 and 2004 helped to further her interest in Chinese culture with continued study of the Chinese language and calligraphy.

She strives to “bring poetry to her paintings and to write a painting in her poetry.” This style of art often includes Chinese writing or lettering on the rice paper. While sometimes it is only the painter’s name, it very often includes additional text, sometimes poetry, which may reveal what was in the artist’s mind at the time the painting was conceived.

The combination of the calligraphy and watercolor and ink artwork is a peaceful, working relationship that produces paintings both stunning and masterful.

She currently teaches Chinese brush painting and has organized and demonstrated at workshops.

She also assists Professor I-Hsiung Ju in editing his books and videotapes on brush painting techniques.
